The need for setting up a hotel workers welfare board was emphasized at a convention organized by the Hotel Employees Federation of India on Monday. Around 120 hotel employees, including 18 union leaders from across the state, were present at the event, inaugurated by N Vasudevan, federation president. For efficient implementation of statutory benefits in the industry, there was a need to set up a squad consisting of the area police inspector, labour inspector and trade union leaders.

Among the recommendations was the need for a revision of minimum wages for hotel employees once in two years and salaries through cheques to avoid exploitation of workers. Since 15% of the salary is deducted for food, employees demanded free food be provided at the work place. Demanding enforcement of these resolutions, employees have decided to hold a demonstration on December 8 in front of the labour commissioner’s office.
