SURAT: As a part of on going campaign of making Surat ‘Zero Slum’ city, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has started construction of 2,500 houses at 11 places in the city.

Construction for another 2,000 homes of 1 BHK in economically weaker section (EWS) and low-income group (LIG) category would begin by Monday. Work for remaining 6,500 of the total of 11,000 homes would begin by February 1. There will be 3,000 EWS and 8,000 LIG houses built .

These houses would come up at 38 different places and would range from ground plus 3 (G+3) storey building to G+15 storey buildings. They would be sold to residents of EWS and LIG category at subsidized rates when ready in 15 to 21 months.

An EWS unit will cost SMC Rs 6 lakh where as an LIG unit would cost Rs 9 lakh to SMC.

State government will give subsidy of Rs 1.50 lakh for EWS unit and Central government subsidy would be Rs 75,000. Moreover, state government has put a condition that each of the EWS unit must not be sold above Rs 3 lakh.

Similarly, for an LIG unit state government, will give Rs 1 lakh subsidy and Central government portion would be Rs 75,000.

“These houses will be sold at Rs 3 lakh for EWS and Rs 7.5 lakh for an LIG unit,” said Jatin Desai, executive engineer, slum upgradation cell of SMC.

“With tenders being on line number of developers and contractors has taken interest in the project and we expect the project to be completed in time,” he added.
