SURAT: The Surat Municipal Corporation ( SMC) may have constructed thousands of houses for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in the diamond city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) scheme, but the slum upgradation department are at the receiving end with the occupants not paying monthly installments on regular basis.

More than 337 EWS houses in Karanj were sealed by the officials from the Varachha zone after the occupants failed to pay the monthly installments from the last many months.

Official sources said that thousands of EWS houses have been allotted to the people residing in the slum settlements and that they have to pay monthly fixed installment worth Rs 427. Most of the occupants are not paying the installed after occupying the EWS houses.

Until now, the Varachha zone alone has collected Rs 1.16 crore as outstanding monthly installment from the EWS quarters in Varachha and Karanj areas.

“We have sealed 337 houses at Karanj and have asked the occupants to clear the outstanding payments at the earliest. There were many who paid Rs 9 lakh on the spot against their outstanding installment amount,” said a senior officer.
