Chief Minister of Goa, Digamber Kamat assured the Union minister for Urban Development, Jaipal Reddy that the State government is working out some solution to the burning land problem. Union Minister had stated on Friday that Goa should permit development subject to protection of the environment. The chief minister is believed to have sent a message to the country’s major real estate developers – now participating at the three day GIREM Urban Planning & Real Estate Leadership Summit at Taj Exotica – that Goans basically feel that Goa should remain as Goa.

Kamat called on the Union urban development minister last night at Taj Exotica and briefed him about the burning issue of mega housing sweeping across the State. “I have told the Union minister on the factual position vis-à-vis mega housing and other developmental issues. My government is working out some solution to the problem”, he told Herald today. In this respect, he said the Task Force has been directed to prepare a plan that would safeguard Goa’s identity. The chief minister further said that he has told Reddy that people in Goa are concerned that they will loose their identity if mega housing projects are allowed in the State. “I told Reddy that the root cause is land and Goa’s small size. Moreover, land in Goa is mostly private or belongs to Communidades and there’s been protests over the question of acquiring land for developmental projects”, he said. Meanwhile, Reddy has reiterated that Goa should allow development subject to the protection of its environment. “Goa is a special case. The environment is fragile. There’s a need to protect the environment”, he reiterated on Friday, while participating in an interaction at the three day summit.
