THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state cabinet has decided to temporarily freeze the draft master plan for capital development. “The decision has been taken owing to the concerns and complaints from various quarters of the society,” said chief minister Oommen Chandy after the cabinet meeting.

There has been no master plan for the Thiruvananthapuram city development and hence a draft was prepared. For submitting the complaints and grievances on this draft plan 60-days’ time was given. However, the majority of the complaints were that the draft has been prepared without conducting any scientific study.

“It has come to the notice of the government that the master plan was prepared without carrying out proper studies and analysis. A new master plan will be given shape after hearing the concerns, especially that of the common man,” the chief minister said.

The draft master plan had received severe criticism, including that of Congress leaders and MLAs. The residents from 15 areas adjacent to Kattaikonam formed an action council after the officials had denied issuance of building permits and receipts of payment of property tax to them citing that their properties have been earmarked for various projects as per the draft master plan.

Kazhakottam MLA M A Vaheed had made it clear that he would not allow to implement the master plan at any cost. Even the Congress members in the city corporation had taken a similar stand. This prompted the state government to temporarily freeze the draft master plan.
