The centre government has approved various road improvement projects for tsunami affected areas of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The projects were given a green signal by T.R. Baalu, who heads Ministery of Shipping and Road Transport and Highways.
For Ramanathapuram highway, NH-49, in Tamil Nadu, the government has granted Rs. 230.83 lakh for the repairing of road that was badly affected by the killer tsunami waves that killed thousands and rendered many homeless.
On this highway, the repairing work will be done on the following stretches from of 113/6-115/0 km, 139/0-140/0 km, 145/0-146/0 km, 154/0-156/6 km and 157/8-159/0 km.
Where as some stretches of NH-49 (Tamil Nadu) that connects Madurai and Cochin has been allotted Rs. 184.59 lakh for improvement of road surface to enable smooth drive from km 38/500 to 42/500.
However, NH-45 A on Pondicherry-Chidambaram Road that has narrow culverts will see many culverts being constructed at the following points: at km 68/6, 70/4, 70/8, 86/6, 109/6, 110/8, 113/2, 114/10 (i) & (ii), 116/4 (i) & (ii). For this project, government shelled out Rs. 127.55 lakh.
In Karnataka, Rs. 56.41 lakh will be spend on shifting of utilities for proposed two lanes of stretch from 479 to 490 km of NH-13 that runs through Sholapur-Mangalore section.
