Needless to say, the rates of essential goods are going through the roof. Although this has certainly made life of people costlier but Indian cities still offer cheapest cost of living for expatriates, as per the data showcased by a recent survey.
Metros in India including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, and Bangalore have moved one or two steps up in a list of Asia’s most expensive cities for expats. The updates list has recently been released on Tuesday by Hong Kong based ECA International, a human resources consulting firm.
Mumbai has bagged the title of being the most expensive city in India and is ranked 24thin Asia and 192nd in the world. The city is followed by New Delhi at 25h position in Asia, Chennai at 30th, Hyderabad at 32nd, Kolkata at 35th, Pune at 36th and Bangalore at 40th.
Compared to the survey held in September 2006, the cities have become quite expensive in last few months.
Mumbai and Bangalore have moved up by one position each. On the other hand, New Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, and Hyderabad have jumped up by two positions.
Growing inflation rate and a sharp increase in the value of rupee are two factors behind such a picture.
Rupee has appreciated nearly 14 per cent against the dollar over the past 1 year, thereby hurting expats as they are paid in the US dollars or other foreign currencies.
Inflation in India is believed to have risen above the average for Asia. It is growing faster than in places such as Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
