New Delhi: An engineer with the North Municipal Corporation was assaulted and allegedly threatened by a group of unidentified men during a demolition drive in Libaspur on Wednesday.
Bhanu Pratap (29), a junior engineer with the Building department under Civil lines zones, was returning to office after razing unauthorised construction on a plot reserved for warehouses around 3 pm when a mob ambushed him, an official said.
Pratap suffered severe facial injuries and bruises on his leg. He was taken to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital.
“After the demolition drive was over, the demolition squad started proceeding towards their workplace. I was travelling on my bike when I saw a mob chasing me on their vehicle. They overtook my bike and started beating me up,” said Pratap.
He said the group later took him to an unknown location.
“They kept bundles of cash on my hand and start clicking my pictures. They blackmailed me that if I continue the demolition drive they will spread my photographs and accuse me for extortion,” Pratap said.
Officials said the demolition drive was earlier disrupted by the area councillor Angoori Devi.
“The area councillor disrupted the demolition drive and produced a note that the officials cannot demolish the structures. She also asked the junior engineer not to take up any demolition drive in the area,” said a senior official, present at the site.
Pratap alleged that the attack on him was planned by the councillor’s son. Angoori Devi refused to comment on the issue.
No police case has been registered yet. Pratap’s family said after he is discharged from the hospital, his medico-legal certificate will submitted to police.
“We are investigating the matter as the incident has been brought to notice. No formal complaint has been filed by the junior engineer,” said an officer at the Samaypur Badli police station.
This is the fourth incident this year, where civic officials have been hauled up while on duty by goons.
