New Delhi: He thought a bit of impersonation would help him get a flat under the DDA housing scheme. All he had to was pretend to be someone else and hoodwink the area SDM. But when the imposter erred while trying to recollect the names of the ‘other man’s’ wife and children, he was caught in the act. The man and his associate have been arrested.

The incident was reported last week from the office of Ajay Arora, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Parliament Street.

Based on the SDM’s complaint, police arrested the accused, identified as Gyan Chand, a resident of Ranhola in Najafgarh, and Diwan Chand, a resident of Amritsar, Punjab.

According to police, Gyan Chand is the General Secretary of the Punjab Hindu Visthapit Sangharsh Samiti in Nangloi, Najafgarh.

The SDM in his complaint said, “Gyan Chand has been following up the case of allotment of flat to a man named Ram Prakash under the DDA housing scheme for Rehabilitation of Punjab Migrants and has been impressing upon me to send a recommendation to DDA for allotment of a flat to Ram Prakash.”

However, police said the SDM informed Gyan Chand that since Ram Prakash’s whereabouts were not known, his eligibility under the scheme could not be verified.

The SDM, however, told Gyan Chand to ask Ram Prakash to appear in person before the SDM so that the case may be processed on merit.

As requested, Gyan Chand brought along a man to the SDM’s office this week, introducing him as ‘Ram Prakash’. “He produced an old ration card issued in the name of Ram Prakash and an acknowledgment of application under the scheme for Rehabilitation of Punjab Migrants of the DDA,” the SDM stated.

“However, when asked to give the names of his family members, including his wife, he was unable to give the correct details, which made me suspicious about his credentials,” the SDM said.

Police said that on sustained inquiry, the person gave in and disclosed that he was not Ram Prakash but Diwan Chand from Amritsar.

“The two accused connived to cheat the government by impersonation in order to obtain a flat under the DDA housing scheme. We have registered a case of cheating by impersonation and forgery under sections 419, 468, 471 and 34 of the IPC,” said a police officer investigating the case.
