Driving through metalled roads across the suspension bridge over the river Yamuna, or taking a flight in skybus to reach office in time will no more be an illusion in next few years. It’s like a dream of Delhities coming true. Time is no far away when the Capital will be known as a world class city. Also, Lutyen’s Delhi has got the honor to cater to Commonwealth games this time, which has certainly acted as a catalyst in the country’s infrastructure development.
Industry watchers feel that the infrastructure juggernaut that seemed to have lost its pace after the year 1982 Asian Games has recollected the spirits with Delhi winning the bid for hosting the Commonwealth games in 2010. Close on the heels of Delhi is Beijing in cashing the Games’ Euphoria as it is going to witness the largest construction projects for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Commonwealth Village in Delhi will spread over 63.5 hectares. While 21 hectares will be reserved for use of general public, 26 hectares will have a green patch and 16.5 hectares will be earmarked for housing accommodations.
By the end of 2006, the planning and designing will be over and by 2009 all types of construction will be completed. The Commonwealth village will feature a residential zone and an international one as well. While the former will provide accommodation to around 7,500 competitors and officials, the latter would have an array of amenities like accreditation centre, ceremonial plaza, retail facilities, media centre and entertainment outlets.
