Karol Bagh, Delhi’s traditional trading district and a favorite haunt of shopping enthusiasts is soon to bear a designer look with the government’s plans to revamp the main points of the area – Ajmal Khan Market in support of private builders.

The plan has been proposed by the Urban Development Ministry and Delhi Development Authority (DDA). If the planned prospects fall in the right place, it would again be a major face-lifting for the Capital. The chaotic market will be redeveloped into an exclusive shopping avenue equipped with modern amenities. The traders will be relocated to a new sparkling mall like ambience.

The new Karol Bagh market will also house apartments whereas the remaining space will be used by the builders on a revenue sharing model with the government.

Apart from saving the crumbling infrastructure of the area, the move will, however, resolve a major problem of perpetual traffic jams. The government is also planning to come up with same redevelopment models for the busy areas of Sarojini Nagar, Paharganj, and Daryaganj.

The bidding norms for the proposed project will be finalized as soon as zonal plans for Delhi are prepared.

Objections from certain sections within the government are responsible for the snail pace of the project. Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has already filed an objection to the proposal, says an official close to the development.

Considering political sensitivities of the ruling Congress party, it may not be easier to pursue the plans smoothly, adds the official. There is also a fear of anguish from local traders running shops in the bustling market of Ajmal Khan for generation. Moreover, the market has already made a significant place in the hearts of Delhities.
