GURGAON: The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has been charged with corruption for not including an under-construction building in Jharsa in its list of buildings that violate laws prohibiting commercial activities from residential areas.

A list of 401 such buildings was released on Friday and the MCG said notices were being sent to all the alleged violators. This comes days after the municipal corporation was accused of partiality by the mayor himself for the manner in which a building belonging to senior deputy mayor Yashpal Batra’s family was sealed.

The latest case goes back to October 2010 when a private builder, in collusion with 17 villagers who owned a piece of land, started to construct a residential complex without the required approval of the MCG. But despite repeated complaints, the construction is still going on.

“Three floors have already been built. It’s evident that authorities don’t want to stop the work here. It appears that top officials have been bribed by the builder and therefore despite the divisional commissioner’s instruction, the work still going on. Also the departments blame each other,” said Rajesh Kumar, a complainant.

“The MCG says that since the plot is adjoining Sector 39, HUDA should stop the construction. I have met the municipal commissioner and chief engineer several times but they blame the junior staff for not being able to stop the construction,” he added. Some sources within the MCG said that the chief engineer himself is involved in this case.

“He is trying to save his own skin by blaming others, but the fact is that he has purposefully omitted this particular building from the list,” said an MCG official. However, when asked, the chief engineer categorically denied the charges. “It is not my job to demolish this building since the district town planner has already passed an order to demolish it. Where is the need for two orders for the same building?” asked B S Singroha, chief engineer of the MCG.
