Though a month has passed since it was decided to get a feasibility report on the proposed underpass near Signature Tower prepared by a private company, there has been no progress on this front. The representatives of the company – which is already preparing feasibility reports of the proposed flyovers in Gurgaon – were also present during the meeting.
“We haven’t got a go-ahead from the officials till date,” said a company official on the condition of anonymity.
As suggested by an expert panel in March this year, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) had called a meeting with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) in which officials from the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) and Gurgaon traffic police were also present.
Starting from Huda City Centre Metro station, Signature Tower is the first bottleneck on the expressway followed by Maharana Pratap Chowk and Atul Kataria Chowk on Mehrauli Road and Old Delhi road, respectively, in the old city of Gurgaon. The flyovers are proposed on the latter two stretches by the civic body.
The panel had suggested signal-free traffic to connect east and west Gurgaon. This included construction of the flyovers at Maharana Pratap Chowk and Atul Kataria Chowk, respectively, and an underpass at Signature Tower.
The panel’s observation is based on long waiting time at Signature Tower – ranging between 172 minutes to 192 minutes – during the peak hours.
The panel observed that the two flyovers and an underpass would provide signal-free traffic on the road connecting Gurgaon railway station in Old Gurgaon and Huda City Centre Metro station in New Gurgaon.
“We haven’t ruled out the possibility of an underpass. The maximum traffic coming from Huda City Centre takes a right turn at Signature Tower towards Iffco Chowk. Constructing one underpass won’t be enough to manage traffic,” said BS Singroha, chief engineer, MCG.
