Known as twin city of Noida, Greater Noida is zooming away in the wake of real estate activities and emerging as popular destination for investors. The newly developed city envisages taking its current capital of 50 sq km to 120 sq km by 2021. An unprecedented demand of land for development of commercial, residential, and industrial spaces is persuading the government to revise their blue prints, engulfing towns as far as 20-60 km away into the plans slated for upcoming city. What better example to cite than Gurgaon Master Plan which has already incorporated Manesar (20 kms from Gurgaon) – into the view city limits.
However, the city which has worn its racing shoes is certainly ‘the Capital city’, New Delhi, currently at 1,483 sq. km. The National Capital Region (NCR), of which Delhi is a part, is 30,242 sq. km, including 13,413 sq km of Haryana, 10,853 sq km of Uttar Pradesh, and 4,493 sq km of Rajasthan. The new Delhi Master Plan talks of a megapolis that is still in the works.
A number of developed as well as developing cities already houses mega cities. For instance, Shanghai had 20 urban and 10 suburban districts. The city covered an area of only 636.18 sq km in 1949 whereas it is 6,340.5 sq km.
