The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has lined up many malls to be constructed across the city and seems specific regarding processes such as branding and logo which are believed to be the main marketing tools of private companies.
The authority is planning to come up with ten such shopping malls in 2008 and will named the chain as ‘M-CUBE’ or Municipal Mall for masses and would soon have a new logo for the same.
MCGM does not look upon it as a business venture but as its obligation of providing for public markets by giving a kick start to the malls, says Manu Kumar Srivastava, Municipal Commissioner.
Municipal markets will be redeveloped to build the malls and the MCGM has already estimated the value which goes over Rs 15 crore for the malls in the current year’s estimates.
Although, the authority is focusing on specialized markets selling single commodity, but the malls will bring everything under one roof and will be more appealing aesthetically, says Srivastava.
The hawkers will be given additional spaces in the mall to run their departmental stores, food courts, vegetable and food markets. However, it will certainly not be possible to provide space for all the city’s hawkers.
Add to that, the mall will also feature housing stalls of items made by self-help groups and women’s groups. MCGM also has plans to have one such mall in every neighborhood in the city.
