Designing A Dreamy BedroomBedrooms are fun to furnish and decorate. Here are a few tips on how to spruce up your most intimate space

There are different styles one can bear in mind when it comes to selecting the right look for the bedroom.

PERIOD STYLE:

This style speaks of an old world charm complete with sophisticated wooden flooring with a lavish carpet or a vibrant rug thrown over it to create warmth. Soft, white furnishing with intricately printed, lacy curtains exude an air of wispy romance.

EXOTIC:

This is an ideal style for most people having dim artificial lights in their bedroom. We suggest the use of rich colours on the walls with bright coloured fabrics which create depth and adds to the cosiness in the room. But be sure to choose a really soft light and not bright, as soft light will bring out more richness from the colours used in this room.

PRETTY PASTEL:

This style involves co-ordinating fabrics and wall colours in pastels to give an overall attractive effect. In this style even the wardrobe shutter can match the wall colours. The carpet should be a shade darker than other fabric so as to impart a luxurious feel.

CONTEMPORARY CHIC:

This look involves a light coloured wooden bed with a soft cushioned back, a line wardrobe, low side tables and funky shelves to accommodate an audio system or a television. The mood of this room is to help the inmates to chill out and relax and can even double up as a family centre. Keep the curtains to a dark basic colour.

FURNITURE BASICS:

BED: One spends about one third of one’s life in the bed, so always remember that comfort takes first place over design. Never try and economise on this piece of furniture. Ensure you have the right size and the best mattress.

A coir mattress is recommended, as this is best for those with back problems. Rubber mattresses are not advisable as rubber makes you perspire a lot. A bed can be of any style. Getting a bed with a wooden base and springs underneath is also a good option. But take care while selecting the springs.

Should not be too soft as it could be bad for those with back problems. A bed with curtains or a four-post bed would be most ideal for suburban houses in Mumbai, as the netted curtains would give good protection from mosquitoes.

When space is a constraint, opt for a multipurpose sofa-cum-bed which is ideal for a small house with big family, as after folding up the bed during the day, you can use the bedroom as an extra living space.

STORAGE METHODS:

A built-in wardrobe is economical as well as helps to save space in a small bedroom. Another alternative is to have a full length wardrobe with sliding shutters, but if you have adequate space, a wardrobe with a narrow shutter would be ideal. Other furniture like a side study table and a utilitarian book rack add to your room.

FLOORING:

Most apartments have ceramic or verified tiled flooring as this can take more wear and tear. While an ideal flooring is a laminated flooring, you could try and throw a rug for the desired effect.

LIGHTING:

Bedrooms should facilitate relaxation, which is why one should have soft light coming from the back or use defused lighting. If either you or your spouse like reading on the bed, a fluorescent light works perfectly. Take care to use proper lights for the dressing table and the study table, as activities done at both tables require good lighting.

EXTRAS:

If your bedroom is on or near the main road or faces a noisy area, we suggest a double-glazed window or thick curtains which keep out the noise levels. Have a small unit in the bedroom for your TV or music system. Decorate your bedroom walls with tasteful paintings or well framed personal pictures.
