Apparel retailer Provogue India Ltd (PROV.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) plans to open 50 retail stores in the next two years, a senior official said on Thursday. “The average investment per shop is about 4-5 million rupees, so we would be investing 200-250 million rupees,” Salil Chaturvedi, deputy managing director, said on the sidelines of a promotional event.

Provogue, which chose Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan as its brand ambassador, has opened six stores in the last 20 days and he said it will be opening stores across Class I to V towns. Provogue is the latest addition to the growing list of retailers seeking to expand into Indian hinterland, and Chaturvedi said he also plans to venture overseas in 12-18 months.

Reeling under the global economic downturn, the retailer had in February said it had deferred plans to expand in Singapore, Thailand and Dubai until September. Chaturvedi said Provogue’s unlisted real estate arm, Prozone Enterprises, a joint venture with Liberty International Plc, would open its first shopping centre in Aurangabad in May 2010, and spread to Coimbatore, Nagpur, Indore and Jaipur. Provogue shares ended 0.66 percent lower at 67.45 rupees in a firm Mumbai market.
