The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organised a sensitization session on “Special Economic Zones – the changing business landscape” at Ludhiana today. Dr L.B. Singhal, Director General, Export Promotion Council, Government of India, who was the chief guest on the occasion interacted with the local exporters and industry members on the concept, benefits, perceptions and myths about the Special Econimic Zones (SEZs). Welcoming the participants, Gunbir Singh, Chairman, CII Punjab State Council, said that whole purpose behind the SEZ concept was to liberalize the trade and investment scenario in India where by a conducive and hassle-free environment was created for industry to grow and propel the development and growth of the particular area and the country. However, due to lack of awareness and myths on SEZ concept, the potential investors — especially from Punjab — have somewhat shied from investing in SEZ’s.

On this occasion, SS Bhogal, Chairman, CII Ludhiana Zonal Council, called upon the members present to use this opportunity to clear their doubts and queries about the SEZ concept. He said there was a need for change in the mindset among the industry of Punjab and start looking towards doing business from SEZs as the Industry counterparts from southern and western India had been successfully operating from SEZs in states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pardesh. The chief guest on the session, Dr L B Singhal, Director General, informed the participants that the SEZ scheme which got implemented in 2006 has already provided direct employment to 2,55,000 persons while another 7,50,000 persons have benefited through indirect employment generated.
