In order to provide housing for pavement dwellers and families living in river banks, Tamil Nadu Government is considering building two model towns in North Chennai and South Chennai anchoring 9,936 tenements and 9,000 tenements respectively.
Each tenement will have a base area of 270 sq ft with infrastructure including piped water supply. These multistoried tenements may have the lift facility as well.
As far as the construction of 536 multistoried apartments is concerned, it would be taken under the Self-Financing Scheme at a cost of Rs 80 crore, says the Minister for Housing Suba Thangavelan.
All facilities will be taken care of. Multistoried parking lots will come up in three commercial locations of the city to avoid traffic congestion. A scheme has already been prepared, says Thangavelan.
The land under the acquisition of different departments has been obtained by the Housing Department. These plots will be developed as residential plots with an array of basic infrastructure facilities as per the need of slum dwellers under the Madras Urban Development Project and Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project.
The sale deeds cannot be given to the dwellers as the land has not yet been transferred to the Housing Department. But, they would soon come under the authorities and the sale deeds would be given to about 5,000 families within the current year.
1,040 apartments will come in place of the 992 multi- storied apartments in Foreshore Estate which will be demolished as they have been decaying for years. The new apartments will come over a large area of 20 acre involving an investment of Rs 95 crore. These new apartments would be allotted to those already living there.
