There are plans to put funds worth $90 billion to develop world class infrastructure along with the Delhi-Mumbai Corridor which run parallel to the dedicated railway freight corridor. The earlier investments are evaluated to be $50 billion.
The proposed corridor will cover six states and an area of 450,000 sq km, says Commerce minister Kamal Nath at CII function. A considerable portion of the investment could be raised through equity with the governments of Japan and India.
The proposed industrial corridor is 1,483 km long and 300 km wide and will have the Delhi-Mumbai railway freight corridor at the centre.
Nath wants the project to cover his home state of Madhya Pradesh. He wants it to be corrected and refined.
The project can be successful only if the route alignment is changed, adds Nath.
Interestingly, Japanese companies have shown large interests in the project. The India corridor will help them to broaden horizons to markets in Europe and Africa, says Akira Amari, Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
As per the drafted concept paper for the project, 10 industrial areas have been identified which would be called nodes and developed in the first phase of project. The time period has been decided between January 2008 and December 2012. These areas have been divided into different investment regions, covering a minimum area of 200 sq km and industrial areas, with a minimum area of 11 sq km.
The shortlisted areas are Dadri-Noida-Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Ahmedabad-Dholera in Gujarat, Manesar-Bawai in Haryana, Igatpuri-Nasik-Sinnar in Maharashtra, and Khushkhera-Bhiwadi-Neemrana in Rajasthan.
