About 59 farmhouses in the Bijwasan area of north-west Delhi face the threat of demolition for carrying out unauthorized constructions. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) gave an undertaking before the Delhi high court (HC) on Friday saying it would demolish the illegal structures in the farmhouses and had already sealed 53 properties. The MCD gave the assurance to bench of justices Vikramjeet Sen and Manmohan Singh which was hearing a petition against unauthorized constructions in farmhouses in certain areas of the capital.

The civic agency claimed before the HC that it had begun the process of tracking illegal constructions within these properties, majority of them being farmhouses, and would demolish them. The bench was upset when told that civic officials had stalled action against illegal farmhouses in Mehrauli, Narela and Badarpur. The Delhi police in its report informed the HC that almost 1,000 properties in these three localities were found to be violating building bye-laws and indulging in illegal constructions. In their report, the police put the approximate number of properties with illegal constructions in Mehrauli at more than 700 and nearly 200 in Badarpur.

Irked that the agency was not doing enough to prosecute the violators, the bench asked the MCD to fix accountability on the engineers who allowed the constructions to come up. The court directed the deputy commissioner of Najafgarh to identify officials who allowed the illegal constructions to continue and update the court. high court also warned that it would initiate contempt action against senior MCD officials if it found them slack in their approach towards unauthorized constructions. The court was hearing a petition by Jan Sahyog Manch that accused civic agencies of were not taking action against farmhouses with unauthorized constructions.
