Marking there protest against the discriminatory policies of the Kerala government, The Joint Action Committee of the construction industry, represented by the Kerala Builders Forum, Builders Association of India and Kerala Builders Association (KBA) stopped there work in the city.
They were protesting against the reduced Floor Area Ratio (FAR) allotted to Kochi and threatened that it would launch an indefinite strike if the government does not take into consideration their demands. The FAR allotted to Kochi was only 1.25 where as in other cities it was up to four.
The builders association was also demanding industry status should be given to the construction sector.
Speaking on the occasion, Kerala Builders Association Vice President Sany Francis, said the real estate sector was facing indifference by the authorities to Kochi.
Where as, Builders Association of India’s state unit President Cherian Varkey, informed that in the next two years projects worth Rs 7,000 crore are expected to come up in the state but if the government continues with its discriminatory policies then the projects would be hit.
Members of the KBS also added that the allotted FAR was notified without any specific study would make real estate investors to shun Kochi real estate sector that would increase the rates for the built up spaces.
