The West Bengal government has signed an agreement with real estate player Emaar MGF Land Ltd and city-based Sinclairs Hotels aimed to boost tourism sector.

The state government has earmarked 400 hectares at Jharkhali in the Sunderbans for setting up an integrated tourist complex where hotels and resorts would be set up, State Tourism Minister Manab Mukherjee said.

Emaar MGF Land Ltd and city-based Sinclairs Hotels has signed an agreement with the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation and Sunderbans Infrastructure Development Corporation.

“The primary focus under the agreement will be the hospitality industry — particularly the budget segment and theme tourism,” Emaar MGF COO (hospitality) Sanjiv Rai told reporters here.

Recognizing the huge potential of the Sunderbans to attract international as well as domestic tourists, Emaar MGF would set up a holiday resort there, Rai said.

While, the Sinclairs group would set up an eco-friendly ethnic resort in Jharkhali at a cost of Rs 15 crore, its chairman Niren Suchanti said after signing the MoU.

Sinclairs would set up a resort with golf course in North Bengal with a budget of Rs 50 crore and would also come up with a hotel management institute near Kolkata within three years, Sinclairs Chairman Niren Suchanti said .

EmaarMGF was very positive about the potential of Sunderbans in developing into a world-class tourism destination, Rai said adding that the work on the project would start very soon.

He, however, refused to disclose the amount of investment for the Sunderbans project.

He said the company was seriously considering proposals to set up hotels at Darjeeling, Dooars in North Bengal and Durgapur and Asansol in the industrial hub of the state.
